Gig Harbor area children trade treats for cash

Harbor kids gave up 140 lbs of their Halloween candy in exchange for money and the chance to send a piece of home to soldiers stationed in Iraq.

SoundBridge Center for Dental Arts in Gig Harbor offered kids the opportunity to trade in their Halloween candy at a rate of $2 a pound. The candy will go in several boxes to U.S. soldiers on duty in Iraq.

"We wanted to do something fun to promote health awareness among parents and kids," says Dr. Joe Simpson, of SoundBridge. "It's a good thing for the troops too."

The office collected candy from Nov.1 to 3, and although the first day was slow, the second two "really picked up," office administrator Laurie Crawford said. She added that one family came back a second time because they decided they had more candy to give.

The office was surprised about the amount of candy that came in.

"We would've gone broke if we had advertised any more," Simpson said with a laugh.

Several kids did not want the money in return for their sweets. "Some kids donated candy without wanting money. Some had uncles in the war and wanted to make sure the soldiers were taken care of," Crawford said.

During the course of the three day buyback, and even the day after, 45 kids and their parents stopped by the office. The kids ranged in ages from 3 to 14.

" The troops really brought people in," said Dr. Karla Bloomquist of SoundBridge. "We had to go back to the bank to get more $1 bills."

The dentists said they hoped the event would help teach kids about the importance of dental hygiene.

Bloomquist said she was questioned about the reasoning behind giving candy to adults instead of children. Her answer was that adults should know how to take care of their teeth, whereas children aren't always aware of the damage candy can cause.

"We know adults should be educated and this was a good way to educate the kids," she said.

The SoundBridge team plans to make the candy buyback an annual tradition.

"I think we'll do it again," Bloomquist said. "It's a way to get kids thinking that dentists aren't so bad."

Crawford added that she will make sure more $1 bills are available, so Dr. Simpson doesn't end up asking his patients for change, as he did this year.

"We would like to give a personal thank you to all those who brought in candy," Simpson said.
